A city can have exemplary LGBTQ protections, a rainbow-painted crosswalk and a dozen gay bars and still be thoroughly unremarkable when it comes to hooking up. Conversely, some places where gay life remains discreet can have surprisingly active sexual cultures operating just beneath the surface.
