A Desert Institution: How Richard Altman and CCBC Helped Shape the Soul of Cathedral City
A Desert Institution: How Richard Altman and CCBC
Helped Shape the Soul of Cathedral City
From a hidden oasis of freedom to a celebrated cornerstone of community,
CCBC stands as a testament to vision, generosity, and belonging
By Vic Gerami
Long before Palm Springs became synonymous with LGBTQ visibility, Cathedral City quietly carried the torch.
It was here, in a less polished but more fearless era, that gay men found something rare: space. Space to gather, to express, to exist without apology. While other cities hesitated, Cathedral City embraced. It became the desert’s underground sanctuary, where bars, nightclubs, and clothing-optional resorts formed a vibrant ecosystem of freedom and connection.
Out of that bold and unapologetic history emerged one of the most iconic destinations in the country: CCBC Resort
And behind it, for decades, has been one man whose vision, leadership, and generosity have left an indelible mark on the community: Richard Altman

More Than a Resort, A World of Its Own
To call CCBC a resort is technically accurate.
But it doesn’t quite capture it.
From the moment you walk through its gates, CCBC feels expansive, immersive, and alive. Spread across beautifully designed grounds, it offers pools, jacuzzis, secluded paths, social spaces, and a sense of freedom that is increasingly rare.
It has often been described, fittingly, as a “gay men’s Disneyland,” a place where the experience is as important as the amenities.
But what makes CCBC truly special is not just its scale or design.
It is the feeling.
A feeling of ease. Of acceptance. Of community.

The Vision Behind It All
What sets Richard Altman apart is not simply that he built something successful.
It is that he built something meaningful.
From the very beginning, Altman approached CCBC with a sense of pride and personal investment that went far beyond business. He understood what spaces like this represented, especially in a time when they were not widely available.
And he leaned into that responsibility.
Whether walking guests through the property himself, continually improving amenities, or introducing thoughtful additions like the Runway restaurant so guests don’t have to leave for food, his approach has always been hands-on, intentional, and deeply engaged.
That level of care is rare.
And it shows.

A Leader in Community, Not Just Business
Altman’s impact extends far beyond the gates of CCBC.
For decades, he has been a visible and active supporter of the Cathedral City and greater Coachella Valley communities. His contributions span cultural events, charitable initiatives, civic engagement, and community-building efforts that have helped shape the region’s identity.
He played a key role in launching Cathedral City’s LGBT Days, helping bring together leaders, organizations, and residents in a celebration that continues to thrive today.
He has been instrumental in supporting the creation and continued recognition of the LGBTQ Veterans Memorial in Cathedral City, a historic tribute honoring those who served.
As someone who has observed the community closely for years, I can say this without hesitation: I don’t know a charity, non-profit, or cause for which Richard is not a sponsor in the greater desert area. From Cathedral City LGBT Days to Palm Springs Pride, Richard is one of the most generous, reliable, and consistent patrons.
And his generosity has reached across generations, from youth programs to senior services, including the dedication of the Richard G. and Anne K. Altman Craft Corner, a lasting contribution to the Cathedral City Senior Center and its members.

Recognition That Reflects Reality
In many ways, the recognition Altman has received feels inevitable.
A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce, honoring decades of leadership and service, is not just a ceremonial gesture. It is a reflection of sustained impact, of consistent presence, and of meaningful contribution to a community that has benefited from his vision.
But perhaps more telling than the awards is the way he is regarded.
There is a genuine respect, even admiration, from those who have interacted with him, worked alongside him, or experienced what he has built.
That kind of reputation cannot be manufactured.
It has to be earned.

Carrying Forward a Historic Legacy
CCBC is not just a modern success story.
It is part of a larger narrative.
A narrative that begins with Cathedral City’s role as a pioneer in LGBTQ life, a place where freedom was not just permitted, but lived. The resorts, clubs, and communities that once defined the area created a foundation that continues to shape the desert today.
CCBC stands firmly within that tradition.
It carries forward the spirit of those early spaces while continuing to evolve, adapt, and enhance the guest experience in ways that keep it relevant, vibrant, and welcoming.
Why It Still Matters
In an era where many destinations feel increasingly commercialized, curated, and transactional, places like CCBC remain essential.
They remind us of what these spaces were meant to be.
Not just destinations.
But communities.
Not just businesses.
But experiences.
And not just places to visit.
But places to belong.
Final Thought: A Legacy of Vision and Heart
There are business owners.
There are community leaders.
And then there are individuals who manage to be both, seamlessly.
Richard Altman is one of those individuals.
Through his work with CCBC Resort, he has not only created a successful and beloved destination, but contributed to the very fabric of a community that has long stood for inclusion, freedom, and connection.
That is not just an accomplishment.
It is a legacy.
