What is crossfit?
The CrossFit program is a fitness program designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience.
CrossFit is unlike any other fitness program! Whether you are training for the Olympics, wanting to tone up, or just want to gain your functional range of motions back and feel better about yourself, CrossFit’s regimen is tried and proven. And the results are dramatic and rapid! You could be a student or a grandparent, the workouts are the same; we just scale the intensity.
Having a love for fitness and athleticism goes well beyond the boundaries of CrossFit alone, which is why the roots of CrossFit Hollywood (CFHW) were established long before the CrossFit ‘movement’.
In 2008, CrossFit Hollywood officially launched as the brainchild of lifetime athlete/fitness enthusiast, Andy Thompson, and ex-SEAL, Neil Mahoney. Founder Andy discusses how the idea for CFHW developed: “After working in Hollywood for 2 years as a trainer, I discovered the methodology of CrossFit from a fellow gym goer. I would visit the main CrossFit website for fitness ideas where I noticed that they provided a ‘WOD’ (Workout Of the Day). I started incorporating these methods into my training and then my client’s. After 4 months of implementing CrossFit, my clients had more results than the previous two years I had been training them!”
Starting in Pan Pacific Park with only 2 classes and 13 members, CrossFit Hollywood quickly moved into their current location at 3rd and La Brea, where they now offer close to 100 classes per week to over 300 members. At the time, no place in Hollywood catered to like-minded fitness fanatics that needed a higher energy environment. CFHW’s goal was to become the place where you could listen to loud music and get the work done that was required.
CrossFit Hollywood is known around the world for its exceptional coaching and its enthusiastic environment. Since 2008, over 15 other successful gyms have developed from former members of CFHW. CrossFit Hollywood proudly sets the standard for the best coaching staff in the greater Los Angeles area.
Fun and safe environment!
Here at CrossFit Hollywood, we teach kids all the fundamental movements with form as the greatest importance. We have a motto that “Do less better” is the best way to keep children safe, while teaching them the proper techniques that will carry over into fitness, sports, and general athletics as they get older. We have made fitness into a game, creating a unique spin on exercise that disguises it and turns it into something children enjoy!
What is CrossFit Kids?
CrossFit Kids is for children and teens ages 5-16 and combines gymnastics, body-weight calisthenics, and weightlifting elements to develop capacity across 10 General Physical Skills. We add additional focus on elements that encourage bone density, balance, and coordination development. Children and Teens have a great opportunity to maximize their physical skills when exposed to this stimulus during years of peak development, and the elements are combined to keep children engaged and entertained, while teaching them proper movement mechanics and creating a broad athletic foundation. For CrossFit Kids, it is imperative to pair fitness and fun, thus creating a lifelong love of health and fitness for our children.
About Andy Thompson
Andy grew up in Plano, Texas. His passion for fitness began at a young age growing up with a competitive family. He excelled in freestyle in-line skating, gymnastics and track and field. He played all sports from soccer and football to street hockey, motocross, and snowboarding. Then, he started as a personal trainer in 2002 at Gold’s Gym in Austin, Texas while studying martial arts in between work and regular gym workouts. He moved back to Dallas and became an assistant instructor at a Northern Shaolin Preying Mantis kung-fu school while going to school and graduating as an RMT at the Texas Massage Institute. Upon moving to Los Angeles in 2005, he continued to work as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym in Hollywood. During this time he decided to train for the Navy SEAL’s and discovered CrossFit and it’s effectiveness. He realized that he wanted to share this amazing fitness methodology with everyone that crossed his path.
In 2007 his roommate, Neil Mahoney (ex-Navy SEAL) and Andy became affiliated with CrossFit.com, and he started coaching his clients and friends in the park near the Grove in Hollywood. In 2008, with the help of some friends who believed in him, Andy opened up the first CrossFit gym in the greater Los Angeles area. Since then, he has trained all walks of life, from the average weekend warrior, to the competitive CrossFitter, to the moms and dads of LA, to the professional NFL, MLB, athletes, as well as professional artists, dancers, songwriters and musicians all the way up to training A-list celebrities on set for movies on the big screen. He gets to travel the world with clients, and chase his hobbies in his spare time. Since then, he’s looked to entertainment in skydiving, rock climbing, free diving, slacklining, and other focused movement activities that get him outside! Anything that keeps him in the sun and involves movement is what drives his fitness!
